Sony & North Korean Sanctions : Is the finger-pointing relevant to us?

On 25 November 2014, Sony was forced to shut down its entire network following a cyber-attack by a group of hacktivists who identified themselves as #GOP, or Guardians of Peace.  Data released following the attacked demonstrated the wide range of data that was retrieved, and included detailed employee records, passport and visa information about actors and unreleased films. The Guardians of Peace criticised Sony’s poor security, posting some of the stolen data to Pastebin.

Not an April fool joke

I was going to post this earlier in the week, but realising it would look like an April Fool joke, I held back...

It seems that researchers in Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have managed to communicate with and control an air-gapped computer (one not connected to the network) via the heat output of another nearby computer.  Have a look at the video - it's quite fun.

Why are malware warnings ineffective?

An interesting article from Helpnet Security about a study on why people ignore malware warnings, and how to improve the warnings.
